Tokens of Gratitude in Pursuit of Lawful Alcohol Sales

Tips vs. TiPS. One is a monetary token given as gratitude in exchange for a service; the other a skills-based training program designed to prevent alcohol misuse. Either way you look at it, both are an investment in a person.

If you aren’t familiar with Training for Intervention ProcedureS or TiPS, your brand likely has a compliance-training deficit. Here’s why. TiPS is a 35-year-strong program giving bartenders and waiters the skills and confidence they need to sell and serve alcohol.

Developed in 1982, the program is the global leader in education for the responsible service, sale, and consumption of alcohol. To date, TiPS has certified more than 4 million participants and trainers in thousands of businesses and organizations located in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and in more than 50 different countries.

It isn’t a one size fits all program. Instead, TiPS has multiple alcohol server training formats, including courses specific to on and off premise sales, concessions and games, universities, colleges and elderly consumption of alcohol. Teaching sessions are conducted in person or online with duration of up to five hours, depending on the format type. During the sessions participants learn strategies for preventing illegal alcohol sales to underage and/or intoxicated patrons, responsible practices for serving complimentary cocktails and how to intervene with over-served peers in social situations.

The BARS Program recognizes TiPS as a complementary curriculum to its compliance-training methodology. TiPS teaches servers and bartenders the correct way of selling and serving alcohol, while The BARS Program puts their knowledge to the test in real time with Checkers and our Red Card/Green Card system.
